I just got back from a flying visit to the UK, where Reddit is having a moment right now. It’s a key topic of conversation for clients and agencies big and small. But over here on this side of the pond, the conversations have already moved on, and potential is even greater.

Reddit isn't just another social platform used to kill time or settle obscure debates. It's now a key recommendation destination, heavily embedded into the consumer decision-making journey. It's where users go to decide which car to buy, where to travel, which skincare products actually work, whether a purchase is really worth their hard-earned cash. For many Americans, adding Reddit to a search query has become second nature.

The numbers speak for themselves, and there are a lot of them:

For marketers, that increasing ubiquity is incredibly valuable. It offers the chance to reach consumers while they're actually seeking answers and reassurance. But tapping into that opportunity requires more than simply showing up on the platform. Brands need to understand why Reddit has become a powerful part of the purchase journey and how Americans are using it.

The American Redditor

Reddit's US audience is both broad and highly engaged. The platform attracts users spanning every age group, from digitally native 18 to 29-year-olds (44%) to mature audiences aged 50-64 (11%). And while Reddit is accessible across devices, it's first and foremost a mobile platform, with 79% of users browsing on their phones compared to 21% on desktop.

But what makes the American redditor stand out is how they use the platform. American redditors aren't simply scrolling for entertainment – they're seeking advice, recommendations and authentic experiences from communities. They want to talk with real people that offer real, human perspectives.

Where is the trust coming from?

Americans trust Reddit. And that trust extends to the brands that choose to be part of the platform. In fact, users who view ads on Reddit are 46% more likely to trust a brand because it advertises there.

This trust is rooted in Reddit's unique community structure. Conservations are:

Interest-based: Happening in communities, subreddits are created and moderated by people who genuinely care about a topic.

Community voted: Helpful contributions are upvoted, while low-quality or misleading content is downvoted in a self-regulating system that adds credibility.

Anonymous: Users are often more willing to share honest opinions and sensitive topics when their identity isn't the focus.

Public: Unlike closed social networks, discussions are accessible long after they're published.

Reddit shows up in every stage in the journey

Many platforms offer brands an either-or scenario in terms of excelling in discovery or conversion. Reddit, on the other hand, is the jack of all trades, playing a role across the entire consumer journey and offering full funnel targeting.

Discovery

What's the best destination for a family vacation with young kids?

Consumers have landed on a discussion page after identifying a need and are starting to explore possibilities. Rather than searching directly for a product, they're often trying to get some inspiration and see what others recommend.

Validation

Are Dyson vacuums actually worth the price?

Once a potential option has been identified, they move to validation mode. Here, they're looking for a sense-check – are marketing product claims for real? Are there any possible drawbacks? 75% of shoppers say they can have genuine discussions about products and brands to try on Reddit. It's this candid conversation that makes Reddit stand out.

Decision

Which iPhone should I buy in 2026?

At this stage, the shortlist has narrowed, and options are actively being compared before the final purchase. Users can access detailed conversations around pricing, features, performance, and suitability from people that have already made similar decisions. It removes uncertainty and accelerates purchase confidence.

Advocates

I used the new Clinique moisturizer for a month. Here is my honest review.

Once the purchase is made, the journey isn't over. Reddit communities are filled with consumers sharing reviews, offering advice, troubleshooting issues, and recommending brands. This creates a powerful feedback loop, with positive experiences fueling advocacy.

I'm a brand – what does this mean to me?

To put it simply: you can reach high-intent audiences, not just broad demographics. You've got more opportunities to appear where consumers are actively looking for guidance.

Reddit's US audience is large, highly engaged and unique compared to other social platforms, meaning brands can reach people they may not find elsewhere. Audiences are often already in the consideration mindset and actively discussing their needs, challenges, and purchase intentions. This creates a different advertising environment from channels such as Meta or TikTok.

Align targeting with user intent

Invaluable still, are the multiple ways available to connect with audiences throughout the purchase journey:

  • Target where they are through custom audiences, customer lists, engagement retargeting, and pixel retargeting
  • Target what they say using keyword targeting
  • Target who they are through location, device, and demographic
  • Target what they care about using communities and interest-based groups

Build trust through participation

Success on Reddit doesn't simply run on ads – it's about contributing value, becoming a part of the conversation rather than disrupting it. Ask Me Anything posts, polls, and community discussions help brands meaningfully interact with Reddit communities and establish credibility.

Turn conversations into tangible outcomes

Engagement isn't the only outcome Reddit's community-driven environment can deliver. For performance marketers, Reddit offers something increasingly difficult to find on other channels: an audience that's already thinking about what to buy next. Utilising platform capabilities like Reddit Ads can give brands +20% ad awareness lift and average ROAS of $6.94

Put Reddit on your radar with IDHL

Reddit is where consumers go when they want real opinions, not commercial marketing messages. Genuine conversation influences real decisions, making it one of the most influential platforms in the purchase journey and the hardest for brands to ignore. Knowing how to show up, however, is just as important as showing up at all.
