242% increase in sales volume from a smarter Kentico rebuild

Transforming IStructE's eCommerce to drive stronger sales performance and easier ongoing management

Millenium Bridge in London

Founded in 1908, The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) is the world’s largest membership organisation dedicated to the art and science of structural engineering. To support an overhauled membership experience and rebuild their platform, they partnered with IDHL.

The challenge

With over 30,000 members across 115 countries, IStructE is a globally recognised authority within the structural engineering industry. However, their existing website needed a rebuild to better serve a young, technically savvy and international membership.

The plan centred on creating a futureproofed and responsive website that could become IStructE's primary enagement channel. The rebuild also needed to migrate their eCommerce store onto Kentico, maintain brand continuity and integrate seamlessly with existing systems - all working to tight timescales and an agile MVP approach.

IStructE had already carried out extensive user research, defining target audiences and key journeys. Our challenge was to apply these insights through UX-led design while enhancing CRM integration and eCommerce functionality. Maintaining business continuity and delivering a scalable platform capable of supporting the organisation for at least five years were also key considerations.

Our approach

Ensuring long-term functionality

As an experienced Kentico and membership-sector partner, we focused on delivering a robust MVP without compromising long-term flexibility. Working from IStructE’s research outputs, we validated user journeys and prioritised UX while enhancing core functionality.

Futureproofing the platform

We decoupled CRM integrations using entity models rather than relying on Kentico's Integration Bus. This plug-in approach reduced complexity and ensured scalability should the CRM be upgraded in the future. A detailed code review allowed us to reuse existing Kentico components and migrate complex functionality efficiently. By leveraging Kentico’s out-of-the-box eCommerce features alongside custom Smart Search indexes, we delivered improved usability and easier site management within the tight deadline.

Post-launch maintenance

Our team continued working with IStructE on a defined roadmap, delivering phased enhancements including application forms, GDPR consent management, improved search, expanded eCommerce functionality and a new expert witnesses section. The platform was later upgraded and successfully integrated with Dynamics CRM, made more efficient by the foresight taken during the initial build.

The results

Working together for many years now, the partnership we’ve developed is an open and transparent relationship build on trust to deliver each phase of their project successfully. Our work continues with IStructE on an ongoing retainer basis which future plans in the pipeline.
