Founded in 1908, The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) is the world’s largest organization dedicated to the art and science of structural engineering. To enhance membership experience and rebuild their platform, they partnered with IDHL.

The challenge
With over 30,000 members in 115 countries, IStructE is a global authority in structural engineering. However, their website needed rebuilding to better serve a young, tech-savvy, international membership.
The plan focused on building a future-proof, responsive site as IStructE's main engagement channel. The rebuild required migrating their eCommerce store to Kentico, preserving brand consistency, and seamless integration with existing systems—all under tight deadlines and an agile MVP approach.
IStructE had done extensive user research, defining target audiences and key journeys. Our challenge was to apply these insights through UX-led design while improving CRM integration and eCommerce features. Ensuring business continuity and delivering a scalable platform to last at least five years were also key.
Our approach
Ensuring long-term functionality
As an experienced Kentico and membership-sector partner, we aimed to deliver a robust MVP without sacrificing long-term flexibility. Using IStructE’s research, we validated user journeys and prioritized UX while enhancing core features.
Future-proofing the platform
We decoupled CRM integrations with entity models rather than relying on Kentico's Integration Bus. This plug-in method cut complexity and ensured scalability for future CRM upgrades. A detailed code review let us reuse existing Kentico components and migrate complex features efficiently. By leveraging Kentico’s built-in eCommerce with custom Smart Search indexes, we improved usability and eased site management within the tight timeline.
Post-launch maintenance
Our team worked with IStructE on a planned roadmap, delivering phased updates including application forms, GDPR consent management, enhanced search, expanded eCommerce, and a new expert witnesses section. Later, the platform was upgraded and integrated with Dynamics CRM efficiently, thanks to foresight during the initial build.
The results
After years of collaboration, our partnership is open and transparent, built on trust to deliver each phase successfully. We continue working with IStructE under an ongoing retainer with future projects planned.
